Thomas Tench brings a wealth of real-world experience to the classroom after spending 16 years working in elite-level rugby with Worcester Warriors. Starting as an intern, Thomas progressed to lead the club’s performance analysis department for over a decade. During his time at the club, he worked alongside some of the sport’s top coaches and athletes, playing a key role in two Championship final wins that led to promotion back into the Rugby Premiership, as well as a Premiership Cup victory in 2022.

As Head Analyst, Thomas focused on innovation in a fast-evolving field, while also building a working environment rooted in human connection, collaboration, and trust. After his time in professional sport, he transitioned into higher education - first at Cardiff Metropolitan ºù«ÍÞÊÓÆµ, where he supported over 300 performance analysis students and played a key role in their work-based learning and employability development.

Now at the ºù«ÍÞÊÓÆµ of Worcester, Thomas continues to support students on their academic and professional journey.

Teaching & Research

Teaching Interests:

Thomas’s teaching interests reflect his transition from elite sport into higher education. He is particularly focused on emerging technologies in performance analysis, the evolving role of the analyst within high-performance environments, and the dynamics of coach-analyst and analyst-athlete relationships. He also has a strong interest in optimal learning strategies and leadership approaches within high-performance sport.

Research Interests:

Thomas is a researcher focused on the role of work-based learning in higher education and its impact on employability in the sports performance analysis industry. His work explores how practical experience prepares students for the field and examines the recognition and rewards given to performance analysts relative to their qualifications and expertise. Through recent and ongoing projects, Thomas aims to improve professional standards and career sustainability within the industry.

External Responsibilities

Thomas is an active coach in the rugby regional leagues, committed to expanding his coaching expertise while leveraging his extensive background in sports performance analysis. He continuously seeks opportunities to refine his approach and enhance player development through a blend of analytical insights and practical experience.
