The Foundation Group Operational Manager Development Programme was developed following an assessment of the learning needs across 4 NHS Trusts, aimed at leaders in operational roles who manage others.

The programme delivered a series of masterclasses over a 12-month period, exploring topics designed to enhance leadership capability, drive innovation, and embed best practices.

The programme collimated with an Operational Excellence Conference, showcasing innovation and improvement to ways of working and celebrating the achievements of participants.

Glen Burley is the National Financial Reset and Accountability Director for NHS England and is also the Foundation Group Chief Executive.

He said: “I’m really proud of all the teams across the group. What we’ve created is a situation where you’ve got four separate trusts who are all really focussed on what they need to do for their populations, but also they get together, they work together, they share best practice, and as anyone here can tell, they really get on with each other.”

He continued: “I’ve got an approach of continuous improvement. It isn’t about saying ‘take something from that trust and put it into your trust because it works’, it’s about saying ‘take a look at what they’re doing and take it back to your trust and try to come up with your version of it.’ What we get then is a slightly better version of something.”

He added: “We’ve got to get the balance right, so each trust has sovereignty and identity, but they’re part of a bigger thing, they’ve got some scale. One of the main reasons it works for us is that if you look at the services that each trust has, there are a lot of similarities; they’re facing similar challenges, and they have a similar scale so a solution which is working in one is likely to work in another.”

Professor Sally Moyle, Pro Vice Chancellor, Health and Science, ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ of Worcester, spoke at the event.

She said: “We looked at how individuals taking part in these projects might want to bring their learning into a potential work-based module of learning, and gain credit through our CPD professional development framework which we’ve just launched at the ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ.

She added: “This could build on a programme of study which fits the needs of the service they’re trying to improve.

She said: “We also talked about how they might want to share their work, by going to conferences, joining research groups or writing papers, and we can support them with that.”

Jane Ives, Managing Director of the Wye Valley NHS Trust, said she has been able to see the impact the work of the Foundation Group has been having on her teams and their patients.

She said: “It’s fantastic. The group has been in place for the last nine years, and it has been getting bigger and bigger as more organisations join.”

She continued: “Because we’re geographically distant, lots of work gets done online. But getting people in a room together means people can create those networks, make those friends in other organisations so they can collaborate and share good practices.
